Hold on to your hats, it's going to get crazy!

This week:

Tuesday - Mrs. Molony is hosting an ice cream party for us as a thank-you for all of the student's hard work in the reading garden. We are also going to plant lots and lots of native plants in the garden tomorrow, so remind students to come to school ready to possibly get dirty. ;-)
Wednesday - Step-Up day - we will be headed to the Middle School to see where the students will be learning next year and meet their teachers.
Thursday - The seniors will be walking our halls so that we can congratulate them.
Friday - we will be heading to Laudholm Farms to learn about watersheds and estuaries. If you have not sent in the permission form, please do so as soon as possible. And, again, remind students to wear layers, good walking shoes, and bring a water bottle.

Next week:

Monday - Field Day and Carnival Day - dress to be outside all day, sunscreen, water, etc.
Friday - Last Day of School - half day!

Wow! What a beautiful long weekend! I hope everyone was able to get outside and enjoy it!

I feel like we are in the eye of the storm this week :-) We are getting over the whirlwind of testing and solar cars, this week we can relax, and be a bit back to "normal", before the following weeks of Step-Up Day, field trip to Laudholm Farms, Field Day, Carnival Day, etc.

Solar Car Race Day was amazing! Thank you to all who volunteered! Your students did amazing. I am so proud of ALL of them! I added some photos to our 2022/2023 album.

The students will participate in Record Store Day on Thursday, June 1st from 1:55-2:55. They have worked hard on creating album covers to share.

Also a reminder, we do NOT have Early Release Thursdays anymore. June 1, June 8, and June 15 will be full days.

This is a reminder that Saturday, June 3rd, MGWS will have an outside learning clean-up day. The day will run from 10:00am until 2:00pm. We have some fun work to be done, rock painting, and lunch planned. Come for the whole time or just for an hour to lend a hand. There is a letter being sent home today so that you can RSVP. I hope to see you there!

Math - We will start reviewing common denominators and adding and subtracting fractions.

Language Arts - The students will finally be able to share their poetry books. We will also continue with the Westing Game, reading for fluency, learning new vocabulary, and summarizing.

Social Studies - We will start learning about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Monday and Tuesday this week the students are taking the MEA - Science assessment.

Friday is our Solar Car race day. If parents would like to volunteer, here is the sign-up link. Solar Car Race Day volunteers We greatly appreciate all of your help and support.

Saturday, June 3rd, MGWS will have an outside learning clean-up day. The day will run from 10:00am until 2:00pm. We have some fun work to be done, rock painting, and a BBQ planned. Come for the whole time or just for an hour to lend a hand. I hope to see you there!

Math - This week the students will be assessed on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. Next week, back to fractions!

Language Arts - Most of this week will consist of MEA testing and solar cars, LOL. Hopefully, we will get in some of The Westing Game as well. :-)

Happy Mother's Day! I hope everyone was able to enjoy the beautiful weekend!

We will have the Maine Through Year Assessments this week. The math one is on Tuesday, and the Reading is on Wednesday. Remind your child to come rested and to have a good breakfast :-)

Wednesday the 6th grade band will be coming to perform for us and to have a question and answer session with the 5th graders about next year.

Math - We will be reviewing all operations of decimals.

Language Arts - We will finish up our poetry books, making sure we show examples of personification, alliterations, similes, and metaphors.

The students will be writing in their Circle Notebooks tomorrow so expect them to come home. Thank you for participating in the letter writing. The students love reading your notes.

We will continue The Westing Game.

Science - Solar cars, solar cars, solar cars! The cars are coming along great. We have some creative engineers among us! The race day will be next Friday. We will be sending out a sign-up for volunteers if you are free to come in and help that day.

I hope you were able to get some great stories from yesterday's adventure. We had such a great time! The weather couldn't have been more perfect. My favorite part was seeing all the kids kayaking through the lake. So awesome! I will add pictures to our Google link this week.

This is a reminder that Artists and Authors Night is this Thursday from 6-8pm. It's a great night to celebrate art, music, and writing.

Math - This week we will start dividing decimals.

Language Arts - The students are finishing up some poetry lessons. We will share some on Artists and Authors, however, we are not completely finished with our poetry books. They may be out as, "Works in progress" ;-)

We will continue The Westing Game. The students are learning some tough vocabulary and summarizing.

Science - Solar cars, solar cars, solar cars! It's that time! The next two weeks will be filled with designing, engineering, reworking, testing, and hopefully tears of laughter and not frustration ;-)

Social Studies - Tomorrow a company is coming in to share a Virtual Reality field trip to the Boston Tea Party and walk around Boston during the American Revolution. I am excited to see this!

Ok, who is ready for some sunshine?! We really lucked out last Friday and had a great day collecting data at the Rocky Hill Preserve vernal pools. I will add pictures to our classroom Google Photos link.

This is a reminder, we are going to Camp Lincoln on Monday, May 8th. We will leave here by 8:00am, please drop your student off by 7:45am with backpacks, water bottles, layers, and footwear ready to hike. We will be back around 6:00pm. I am so excited about this adventure!

This Friday is our day to attend the book fair!

Math - We will continue multiplying decimals.

Language Arts - We will continue with our poetry unit. This week we will be adding in figurative language; similes, metaphors, alliterations, and personification.

We will continue The Westing Game. The students have made some great inferences and predictions.

Science - Well, this week we were supposed to be outside learning about the sun, shadows, and Earth's rotation. We shall see if we can get out to do that. :-)

As usual, vacation just flew by. We are now in the home stretch. I still can't believe how quickly this year has gone.

This is a reminder that this Friday, April, 28th, we will be going on a field trip to collect data at a vernal pool in South Berwick. I sent home permission forms last week. If you could make sure those are in as soon as possible, that would be great. It could be muddy, so boots might be a good idea.

We are going to Camp Lincoln on Monday, May 8th. We will leave here by 8:00am and not be back until around 6:00pm. Students will need to be dropped off and picked up on that day. More information to come about that.

Math - The students have practiced adding and subtracting decimals. This week and next we will start multiplying decimals.

Language Arts - We have started our poetry unit using the book Love That Dog as a mentor text. The students have created some fun poems already!

We are starting our class read of The Westing Game. The students will switch roles each week and read the book as a reader's theater. We will learn rich vocabulary, practice summarizing, and discuss the mystery genre.

Science - This week we are learning more about vernal pools. Tomorrow we will have a kick-off Zoom call with research scientists from the University of Maine to tell us more about the project that we are collecting data for on our Friday field trip.

I hope everyone has an amazing April vacation!

Friday, April, 28th, we will be going on a field trip to collect data at a vernal pool in South Berwick. I will be sending home a permission slip this week.

Math - We will start learning about adding decimals.

Language Arts - So, this week we will REALLY start poetry ;-) Time seemed to slip away from us last week.

The students will continue in their book groups. We will compare and contrast characters, and practice sequencing and summarizing. The students will finish their historical fiction novels this week.

Science - We will start our ecology unit. The students will be learning about ecosystems and food webs. They will choose one ecosystem to model a transfer of energy through a Rube Goldberg invention. That will be our STEAM Friday. ;-)

Welcome, April! This time has really been going by fast. We have so many fun adventures coming up!

I have mentioned to the students to start thinking about supplies for solar cars. We won't start building until May, but we really love the solar cars to be built out of recycled materials. So, please do not go out and buy anything, but when you are going to throw out that orange juice container, or Amazon box, stop and ask your child if they think that could be used in building a car. The students will need to bring in all supplies, including wheels. Again, we don't want to rip apart any toy cars we have or go out and buy things. I told the kids, to get creative. I do have old CDs that have worked well as wheels.

Math - This week we will continue our work on discovering place value and how decimals play a role.

Language Arts - This week the students will share the persuasive essays that they have worked so hard on. We will also start our poetry unit. This one is usually a fan favorite ;-) We practice poetry by reading a book called, Love That Dog and using the poems in the book to inspire us to write our own.

The students will continue in their book groups. This week focuses on finding descriptive and informative passages to share with our groups and discussing the author's purpose for writing them.

Social Studies - The students will continue to research and work on their 1-pagers. We will share them as a class and also have them out for you to see on Artists and Author's night (more about that to come).

Science - Nathan Cronaeur from EcoMaine will be here on Friday to hold a compost Jeopardy game with the kids. And, as always, STEAM Friday.

I am loving this Spring weather! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend. March is just flying by!

Math - We have started Unit 5 which will focus on place value and decimals. This week we are looking at decimals conceptually, representing decimals in a hundredths chart. Next week we will move on to adding and subtracting.

Language Arts - We are finally in the editing stage of our persuasive essays. Your students have been working really hard and have done a nice job.

This week in reading the students will work on sequencing and the author's purpose using their historical fiction novels.

Social Studies - Tomorrow we will learn about some battles of the American Revolution. The students will then move into choosing one aspect of the revolution that they would like to learn more about and creating a one-pager to share. They are SO amazing at one-pagers!

Happy Spring!!!

Math - This week the students will take the Unit 4 Assessment on multiplication and division. We will review it today and take the test tomorrow. Wednesday we will start Unit 5, decimals.

Language Arts - This week the students will start their conclusions to their persuasive essays. They will type it out and hopefully start the editing process.

We are also going to start learning about the American Revolution. The students will start a new reading group novel focusing on historical fiction and the Revolution. As usual, they will have a certain amount of pages and an assignment due by Friday.

Social Studies - We are going to start learning about the Road to the Revolution. The students will choose a certain aspect of what led us to the American Revolution to research and teach the class.

Math - We will continue practicing division. This week they will need to crack the case of the divided dragon by solving division problems to get clues.

Language Arts - This week the students will continue with their body paragraphs, they have listed their three reasons to support their claim. Now they need to provide evidence (quotes, statistics, etc) to prove their reasoning.

Science - We are finishing up our Mixtures and Solutions unit. This week the students will show what they know by creating a one-pager to go along with their learning.

Winter snowstorm followed by a spring-like day, that's Maine for ya! ;-) I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend.

We will have parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, March 23rd as well as Thursday, March 30th. The chorus will be headed to the high school on Wednesday to participate in a district-wide choral workshop. It is so much fun!

Math - This week we have started dividing using double-digit divisors. We are going to just keep practicing and practicing.

Language Arts - The students are finishing up with their introductory paragraphs and we will move into our body paragraphs, starting with finding three premises (or reasons) for our arguments.

Science - We will continue our unit on mixtures and solutions. We have learned about alchemists and what kind of solutions can change a substance.

I hope everyone had a wonderful February Break! Now, if we can just keep the snow at bay we can get excited about spring. ;-)

Math - We are starting long division. Your students will be learning "the traditional" method, starting with single-digit divisors and moving into double-digit divisors next week.

Language Arts - This week we will be working on the introductory paragraph of our persuasive essays. The students will be writing their enticing hook sentences, giving their readers a quick summary of what they are about to read, and finishing off by stating their claims.

Social Studies - The students are writing their colonial journals in cursive. It's a great lesson on fine motor skills, focus, and perseverance, for sure. ;-)

Science - We have started our unit on mixtures and solutions. This usually tends to be a fan favorite. :-)

The Winterfest was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who helped fundraise and volunteer. The kids had a great time! I will add pictures to our photos link.

Friday, Feb 17th - I Love to Read Day! Students can wear PJ's and bring their favorite books!

Math - This week the students will be working on a project to design and build a house for one of their stuffed animals. They will need to measure their stuffed animal and multiply it by a mixed number to create their height, width, and length. They then will find the area of each side, measure, cut, and build. Hopefully, it will be a fun STEAM project all around.

Language Arts - The students need to finish their fantasy books by Friday. This week's focus will be on summarizing our reading.

They are still researching their topics for their persuasive essays. This week we will learn how to organize our notes to prepare us for our writing.

Social Studies - This will be our last week of living in the colonies. The students are going to put their hard work learning cursive to the test by writing their colonial journals all in cursive. They are so excited ;-)

Well, January just flew by! Yikes! We have a lot of exciting things coming up in February, every Friday until vacation is some sort of fun event.

This Friday we are headed to Portland for a production, Wabanaki Stories. The students have been asked to dress their best for this day out at the theater.
Friday, Feb 10th, we will have our Winterfest. This a reminder that your student came home with our Winterfest Fundraiser. This is our biggest fundraiser and really helps in funding exceptional experiences for our children. Thank you to all who have signed up and received donations. Our progress so far is pretty amazing!
Friday, Feb 17th - I Love to Read Day! Students can wear PJ's and bring their favorite books!

Math - Today we will start Unit 4. This unit will focus on double-digit multiplication and division.

Language Arts - We are on the second week of our fantasy book groups. This week your student will focus on analyzing the characters in the fantasy genre.

We will also begin thinking about our persuasive essays. The students will debate some fun topics (are cats better than dogs, socks with sandals are cool, is basketball better than football, homework should be optional, etc.) to get a feel for needing evidence to back up their claims. They will then choose their own topics that they would like to research and write a 5-paragraph essay to inform and persuade their reader.

Social Studies - Today we are sailing the ocean blue and hopefully landing in the new world. They will then begin their struggles of being a colonist. They will be keeping a journal of their experiences.

Science - We will be starting our unit on Mixtures and Solutions this week.

I don't think we need another snow day for a while. ;-)

Your student will be coming home with our Winterfest Fundraiser. It will give you clear directions on how to sign your child up. Then you can just post a link to social media or in an email to see if any friends and family would like to donate. This is our biggest fundraiser and really helps in funding exceptional experiences for our children. We will celebrate the fundraiser on February 10th with a Winterfest; toboggan races and lots of fun outdoor activities.

Math - Today we reviewed Unit 3. Tomorrow we will have our end-of-unit assessment.

Language Arts - We are still finishing up our Roanoke books. :-)

The students have started their fantasy books. This week's focus is on the setting. Book groups will meet on Fridays. Remind your student to complete the assigned reading and come prepared to discuss.

Social Studies - The students will prepare to set sail to the New World. They will decide on which cargo they should include. Then, they will pull "fate" cards to see how their journey will go.

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend!

Math - This week we will review multiplying and dividing fractions. The students will also take their math NWEA test on Wednesday.

Language Arts - Hopefully this week the students will finish writing their Roanoke picture books. They are working SO hard on these.

We will start our fantasy book groups unit. Today the students will choose the book they are interested in reading. Tomorrow they will plan out their schedule. Book groups will meet on Fridays. Remind your student to come prepared to discuss.

Social Studies - The students will finish up with mapping for the Discovery Colonies unit. They have been earning points for their colonial teams. The points will turn into wealth units that they will need to start their colonies. This week the students will create their team flag. Wednesday we have Osher Maps coming in to do some activities with the class around colonial maps.

Science - STEM Friday - a reminder that if you have square water bottles or large bottle caps, we would love the donation. Also, any random trash that can be made into treasures. ;-)

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend!

A reminder that on Tuesday, January 10th at 6:30pm there will be a parent information night regarding the Pinkham Notch trip. I highly recommend you attend if you can. It is very informative. We haven't been able to go in three years and a lot has changed.
If you are interested in chaperoning the Pinkham Notch trip, please send me an email to let me know. We are not sure about the number of parents we can take, it changes all the time. Therefore, I will not be able to let you know if you are chosen until sometime after February vacation. I believe our trip will be on April 26-28. There will be more information about chaperoning at the Jan. 10th meeting.

Math - We will continue dividing fractions. We are learning how to read situations to figure out if we are dividing a whole number by a fraction or a fraction by a whole number.

Language Arts - The students have started their Roanoke informational picture books. They have some really great theories on what happened.

We will also be creating found poems using Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Social Studies - Lots of mapping and geography happening this week. The students will be learning a little about the Middle and Southern Colonies, along with mapping skills such as longitude and latitude, map keys, and geographical elements.
